Tap dancers unite! A wonderful week of tap dance inspiration happened in Toronto August 23 – August 27 at Byfield Dance Experience (BDX). It was a wonderful opportunity for tap dancers from the GTA and as far east as New Brunswick- to come together, learn, grow and make friends.

Run by some Shawn Byfield guy, the 5 day Tap Dance Intensive briefly covered many topics:

  • Basic tap dance history, notable tap dancers from the past and their contributions
  • Lesson in music history, specifically focusing on Europe’s influence on North American music eras
  • Daily exercises to refine and improve our tap dance technique, musicality and listening skills
  • Improvisation techniques, and how to improve our confidence when creating on the spot
  • Crash-course in reading music, notation, traditional musical forms and how they apply to us as dancers

And of course, a TON of daily tap dance choreography that would make your head spin!

And if that wasn’t enough, not one but TWO popular, exciting and very special guests came in to teach their tap choreography, share stories of their experiences and INSPIRE. Here’s some shots from behind the scenes.

SHARE your thoughts! Comment at end of this post. Stay tuned for Part 2…

BEST TAP CLASSES IN THE CITY!!

ALSO, BEST 5-DAY TAP/DANCE EXPERIENCE IN LIFE!!
So much growth, learning and fun! What more could you ask for?
Oh, I know….amazing, inspiring, nationally (and internationally) known teachers!
Wait….also a really cool group of people to become friends with, learn from and feed off of!
There’s more — intense workouts for 5 hours a day, 5 days of the week!

Words can’t effectively describe the Shawn Byfield Tap Intensive experience. You gotta do it to understand 🙂

    One word.. AMAZING!
Although I hated you at one point Shawn, it was only because you continued to push my brain farther than I thought I could be pushed. And that’s what I love about you.

I also love that we were able to get Everett and David. It’s amazing to have classes with people we wouldn’t normally take from.

Kind of wished we had done a real performance, like 2 years ago.
    But overall, amazing!

I’ve never been so physically and mentally exhausted at the same time..

    BUT I LOVED ITTT!!!

I swear motivating myself to do anything other than shower after each day of intense tapping took so much effort. Yet every day was worth it. I’ve never been so challenged to actually stop and think about every aspect of my musicality while dancing. It was absolutely amazing. The group of people were so laid back and up for the challenge. The teacher?
    That Shawn guy.
Yeah he’s alright. He’s only a tap genius. He has such inspiring passion for dance. It was such a refreshing and inspiring week all together. I loved it.

This is the second time I have attended Shawn’s tap intensive and it was just as amazing, if not more amazing, than the last one!!! I came all the way from New Brunswick just for this, yes Shawn is that good!!! I would highly recommend this to anyone who seriously wants to improve their tap skills and push themselves to the limit!! Shawn has a gift, he truly sees the best in everyone and knows that you can push yourself farther and never lets you think you can’t do anything! Amazing week fill with inspiring moments, fabulous guest teachers, tons of learning and great tapping!!! I can’t wait to come back for it again sometime!!
