Toronto tap dance class in action

These Toronto Tap Classes Are PERFECT For You- Even If You’re Rusty As Heck And Haven’t Tap Danced In Years

Now’s the time.

If it’s been ages since you put your tap shoes on and you haven’t had the chance to throw down with us before, DON’T WORRY! After a few tap dance classes you’ll feel back up to speed. You’ll start remembering all the tap steps you used to master back in the day.

Byfield Dance Experience is Toronto’s favourite dance studio where people just like you come to get back in to it.

Oh, and heads up: We have tons of fun. Period.  And there’s always a gem of wisdom to take away from each tap dance lesson in Toronto, and all of our dance classes.

By the way, if you’re looking for some exercise, Tap dancing is definitely the best damn “boot camp workout” for your brain and your body, just as much as your feet. It’s safe, fun, and the perfect workout for adults. So if you’re looking for exercise, it’s a hell of a lot more exciting than a run on the treadmill. =)

** NEWSFLASH: ** Beginner Tap Dance Lessons are here!

I know at some point you’ve thought about learning to tap dance. I would be doing you a dis-service if I didn’t tell you it’s actually easier than you think. For realsies.

How? Check this out:

Yeah, I just said “for realsies.” You know I’m random sometimes. Anyway, a few friends asked about starting a basic, absolute beginner-beginner tap dance class, here in Toronto.

So. I finally gave in. Yes! Democracy for the win. =) And as they say on the west coast, “I’m like, totally stoked dude.”

But, before I go on…

…not gonna lie, they start soon. Like, really soon.

So to speed things up for you, I posted the SUPER-IMPORTANT info you need to know now (things like when, who, where, plus how to get a discount on a sweet pair of new tap shoes, and stuff about babies. Well, ONE baby) at that link, so go there now.

Please understand, this isn’t for the fence-sitters. If you seriously want to learn to tap dance, NOW’S THE TIME. It’s a new year. And you did say you’d stop procrastinating this year… so…

Did you visit the link yet? Or are you “gonna do that later” too?

Look… If procrastination is something you want to improve, then you owe it to yourself to at least go to the page. Get the info, make a decision. I’ll help you with the rest. Fair enough?

Cool. Gotta get back to work. Check your email early next week for more great news!

Behind The Scenes: Toronto Tap Dance Intensive PART 2

Toronto tap dance group improv

Toronto tap dance group improv

A wonderful week of tap dance inspiration happened in Toronto August 23 – August 27 at Byfield Dance Experience (BDX). It was a wonderful opportunity for tap dancers from the GTA and as far east as New Brunswick- to come together, learn, grow and make friends.

See Toronto Tap Dance Intensive PART 1 here…

Tap intensive Part 2: Starting on the 2nd day, IMPROV was the name of the game. Improvisation is a major component of jazz music and tap dance. It’s helped the art form grow and evolve. Yet so many dancers are terrified when someone asks them to “make it up on the spot.”

During the Tap Dance Intensive all participants learned tips, tricks and techniques to:

  1. Finally eliminate their fear and negative outlook of improvising;
  2. Understand and practice using many different improv strategies;
  3. Strengthen improvisation individually, as well as trading in teams and groups.

There’s a reason we put the “E” in IMPROVE. Because IMPROV is a constant work in progress.

At week’s end, we showed off to a small audience, everyone proudly showing their new respect and understanding of improvisation. Kudos to the participants, and to all tap dancers who continue to work on improv and embrace being creative!

Free Tap Dance Lesson Warmup

7 Feb

Free Tap Dance Lesson Warmup!

I call this tap dance exercise “Can You Dig It!” It focuses on dig heels, weight transfer, pattern recognition, syncopation, and variations in the pattern when switching to other sides.

Slow the tap warm up down if you’re a beginner tap dancer or speed up the exercise to challenge your advanced skills. Best part about this exercise? It’s perfect for all tap dance levels.

We’ll be using this tap lesson at my Toronto dance studio Byfield Dance Experience (BDX) regularly in class.

Learn it, comment and enjoy!

Tap Dancing Gets Better at BDX Toronto

23 Nov

A tap dance lesson in Toronto at BDX – Byfield Dance Experience (http://www.ShawnByfield.com)

Here’s some footage from last week. It’s a bit rough near the end, but the steps got better each time. I should have kept filming!

It’s hard to find tap classes sometimes, but trust me, Toronto has ’em. Byfield Dance Experience (BDX) has two tap dance classes in Toronto every Tuesday night, and one tap class on Saturday afternoon (see the tap schedule here).

If you need to get your tap dance on and just DANCE, why not come on out? The wood feels good.

Saturday’s Tap Dance Lesson Downtown Toronto

21 Sep

This past Saturday’s adult tap class was our first time hoofin” in the new dance studio!

Byfield Dance Experience, aka BDX, is coming together nicely. We made sure to love the dance floor with a funky tap dance routine. (“Get on the Boat” by Prince.)

Toronto adult tap dance lessons are on every Tuesday and Saturday, and it won’t stop anytime soon!
