Behind The Scenes: Toronto Tap Dance Intensive PART 1

Tap dancers unite! A wonderful week of tap dance inspiration happened in Toronto August 23 – August 27 at Byfield Dance Experience (BDX). It was a wonderful opportunity for tap dancers from the GTA and as far east as New Brunswick- to come together, learn, grow and make friends.

Run by some Shawn Byfield guy, the 5 day Tap Dance Intensive briefly covered many topics:

  • Basic tap dance history, notable tap dancers from the past and their contributions
  • Lesson in music history, specifically focusing on Europe’s influence on North American music eras
  • Daily exercises to refine and improve our tap dance technique, musicality and listening skills
  • Improvisation techniques, and how to improve our confidence when creating on the spot
  • Crash-course in reading music, notation, traditional musical forms and how they apply to us as dancers

And of course, a TON of daily tap dance choreography that would make your head spin!

And if that wasn’t enough, not one but TWO popular, exciting and very special guests came in to teach their tap choreography, share stories of their experiences and INSPIRE. Here’s some shots from behind the scenes.

SHARE your thoughts! Comment at end of this post. Stay tuned for Part 2…

Toronto Needs Tap Dance Studio Space!

30 Nov

So recently I talked about how Toronto desperately needs a new dance studio. Especially a place for tap dancers to throw down.

Renting dance studio space is fine, but I’d prefer to have a space of my own to offer tap lessons. One with a solid sprung floor, bright lighting, and feels like home. You know what I mean?

Here’s the flyer for the Toronto Holiday Bonanza I’m hosting:

Help build a dance studio for tap dancers- and more!

Help build a dance studio for tap dancers- and more!

I’ll be hosting the entire evening. The line up of performers is ridiculous, and I couldn’t be more excited! Live funk, soul and r&b musicians, bellydance, hip hop choreography, break dance, afro Brazilian, and of course a lil’ hoofin.

Check out the awesome event details here:

Please share the flyer, send this post to a friend, and come support arts and dance in Toronto!

Finding A Toronto Tap Class

6 Jul

Where is a tap class in Toronto, you ask?

If you need to dance but you couldn’t find a tap dance class near downtown Toronto, you might be interested in tappin’ with us! Sorry, no tap classes for kids, as these classes are for adults 19+.

Unfortunately, there’s not many facilities to run a tap class in Toronto. =(

You will however, find teachers offer tap classes at a community centre, a church, a fitness centre, or even in their own homes. I actually rent space, and teach tap class out of Goodlife Fitness in the Eaton Centre, downtown Toronto.

But it’s not always the space that matters- it’s what you get out of the tap class!

The teacher, the music, the teacher’s experience and training, convenience of the location, and the energy the class provides all make a difference. You feelin’ me?

I’m curious- is it hard to find a class in your neighbourhood?
