TORONTO DISCOVERED: Adult Tap Dance DOES Exist – And It’s Closer Than You Think

Love tap dance, but haven’t had a tap class in what feels like forever? Don’t panic. You can get it all back. Despite what you may have heard, tap dance lessons for adults DO exist. And they’re closer than you think…

Yes, you can feel comfortable tap dancing again. And yes you CAN rekindle your passion and your technique, with adults your own age. If you used to tap back in the day and you’re looking for adult tap dance lessons in Toronto, check out BDX Studio’s inspiring tap dance classes every week.

The newest dance studio to hit Toronto’s downtown is created by local instructor and award-winning choreographer Shawn Byfield, a veteran of television, film and live theatre. His “no stress, no attitude” approach to teaching has inspired hundreds of Toronto residents to rekindle their love for dance.

“As long as you have a little patience, some focus and a heartbeat, I’ll whip  your feet and brain back into shape in no time,” states Byfield, a tap dancer since the age of six. “Refreshing your tap skills is like riding a bike. It all comes back to you once you get back on.”

Byfield and his team share their passion for dance daily in his adults only dance school. But the love doesn’t stop there. Byfield taps into technology and reaches out to a larger audience through his Twitter page.

“It doesn’t matter where I am or what time it is. With Twitter, you can get inspiration 24/7. I tweet my dance and life experiences for the world to embrace. As I grow and learn, I share.”

BDX Studio, which stands for Byfield Dance Experience, is located at 819 Yonge Street, Toronto. Students can get more info online at www.ShawnByfield.com

If planning on joining, your first tap dance class is free. That will help determine what level you’re really at and give you an idea of how much fun you can handle. But a warning for newbies:

“Students at BDX sweat buckets, and have a ton of fun while dancing. Bring your positive energy- and a towel!”

Toronto Tap Dance Class To Brubeck

Toronto Tap Dance Class To “Take Five” By Dave Brubeck Quartet

This is one of my favourite jazz songs to tap to! This tap class forced us to think outside the usual 4/4 time signature and work with 5 beats per bar.

Tap dancing to different time signatures adds so many colourful layers and rhythmic ideas to the mix! Comment, share and enjoy.

Nicholas Brothers Tap Dance Routine

The Nicholas Brothers tap dancers

The Nicholas Brothers tap dancers

Here’s a tap dance video of my favourite tap dancin’ duo, Harold and Fayard Nicholas, the Nicholas Brothers, in Stormy Weather.

Athleticism, syncopation, grace, and all round dynamic hoofin was their trademark style. And, they did it in suits. Classy! Band directed by Cab Calloway.

Nicholas Brothers Dance Routine in Stormy Weather

Nothing compares to the Nicholas Brothers… They’re a great example for all hoofers to learn tap steps from. I like to inpsire all my Toronto tap dance students with videos  from this duo. Stuff like this inspires us all to learn how to tap dance.

Or, learn how to tap dance better. Heck, I can literally watch videos of the brothers for hours!

What you think?

Sweet Tap Dance With Shugga

30 Dec

Happy Holidays tap dance friends!

Here’s recent tap dance footage from a holiday gig I did with my favourite Toronto funk band Shugga.  Shows a little live hoofin, all of it improvised (I was talking about tap dance improvisation in my last post). Because I jam with the band often, I can direct and interact WHILE I dance. Check it out:

Pretty cool stuff! Happy tappin,

Tap Dance Love in Toronto

14 Jul

What an awesome weekend of tap dance love!

So, if Saturday’s awesome “Dixieland” themed tap classes weren’t enough workout for me, I had a dance related film shoot starting at 6:45 am on Sunday, right downtown Toronto all morning to afternoon. VERY fun times.

I then held an audition Sunday afternoon for a tap dance intensive I’ll be running in August.

The room was HOT and SWEATY. We had the tap audition at Metro Movement dance studio, if you’ve ever taken a dance class there you know what I mean… 😉 and the energy was great. I started with a bit of ear training, a quick tap warm up, and got right into a routine to a favourite Thelonious Monk tune of mine.

I couldn’t move my legs much last night from all the dancing… But hey, nobody said the life of a tap dancer would be an easy one!

Congrats to everyone that participated in the audition, and thank you to everyone that shared your love of tap dancing this weekend in Toronto!
